John R. Wood Properties, Christie's International Real Estate

For authors and contributors

Tell a story our readers will remember

Share your expertise, your news or your point of view with the people who read our magazines and sites. Here is what we look for, and how a story goes from your idea to the page.

Where your story can run

Estate Lifestyles

What we are looking for

Expertise

What you know from doing this every day, made useful to someone who does not.

What makes it work: One clear lesson, explained the way you would to a client across the table.

Ideas that fit

  • What to ask before you renovate a waterfront kitchen
  • How a yacht survey actually works, and what it catches

Something new

A first, an opening, a launch, a collaboration, a change worth knowing about.

What makes it work: Say what is new and why it matters to readers now, in the first lines.

Ideas that fit

  • The restaurant opening a second dining room this season
  • A designer's first collection made with local craftspeople

Trends

What is changing in how people live, design, dine, travel or buy, and why.

What makes it work: Not just that something is up or down, but the reason, with a real example or figure.

Ideas that fit

  • Why the outdoor kitchen became the room everyone asks about
  • What second-home buyers want from a guest suite now

Something special

A person, a place or an experience that makes a reader say they did not know that existed.

What makes it work: Specific, sensory details and real names. Show the thing rather than describing it as exceptional.

Ideas that fit

  • A twelve-seat tasting counter with a six-week waitlist
  • The craftsman who still restores marine brass by hand

A product or service worth knowing

Something useful, beautiful or clever, told as a story and not as a sales sheet.

What makes it work: How it is made or done, who it is for, and what it replaces. Readers should learn something even if they never buy.

Ideas that fit

  • How a custom closet is designed around the way you actually live
  • A concierge service built for owners who are only here for the winter

Local knowledge

The neighborhood, the season, the insider's guide that only someone who lives here would write.

What makes it work: Places and people by name, and a recommendation you would make to a friend.

Ideas that fit

  • A morning in the village, in the order a local would do it
  • Where the boats are, and when it is worth getting on the water

What readers want from a piece

A point of view

Readers can find facts anywhere. They come for what you make of them, and why.

Specifics

Names, places, details and examples. "A waterfront estate" is forgettable; the address, the view and the architect are not.

Something to take away

A tip they can use, a place they can go, a question they now know to ask.

Beautiful pictures

Strong photography does as much as the words. Send images you have the right to share, with a credit.

Honesty

Useful and generous beats promotional. A story that sells nothing is the one that gets read and remembered.

Your credit is beside it, not in it

Your name and your company appear with the article. Writing about the subject, rather than about yourself, is what makes it worth publishing.

How it works

  1. 1

    Send it

    5 minutes for an idea

Pitch an idea in a few lines, or write the full article here, photos and all.

  2. 2

    An editor reads it

Usually within a few business days

Every submission is read by a person. Nothing goes live without an editor's review.

  3. 3

We work on it with you

    Usually 1 to 2 weeks

Editors may ask you a question, tighten the writing, and check the facts, photos and credits before it is scheduled.

  4. 4

    We choose where and when

Usually within a few weeks of approval

Editors decide which of our magazines and sites it suits, and schedule it around what else is running.

  5. 5

It runs, with your name on it

On the day it goes live

Your name, and your company if you would like it there, are credited on every site it appears on.

From first send to publication, allow about a month. Some pieces move faster; some wait for the right issue.

Ways to tell it

Feature story

The long read: a person, a place or an idea explored properly.

Lifestyle piece

Dining, travel, design, boating, art and the rest of the good life.

Property spotlight

A narrative built around one remarkable home.

Profile

A person, a team or a business, and what drives them.

Neighborhood guide

An evergreen explainer to a place, written by someone who knows it.

Photo essay

Pictures first, with only the words they need.

Market insights

What the numbers mean, in plain language, for a place.

News and announcements

Short and timely: an opening, a launch, a milestone.

Before you send

  • One idea, stated plainly in the first few lines.
  • Leave your own name and company out of the text. You are credited beside the article, so the piece can inform instead of reading as an advertisement.
  • Real names, places and figures, with a source for any statistic.
  • Photos you own or have permission to share, each with a credit.
  • Nothing written as an advertisement. If it reads like a brochure, rewrite it as a story.
  • A line or two about who you are and why you are the right person to tell it.

Have something in mind?

Send it in a few lines. If you have been invited to contribute, use the personal link in your invitation to write the whole article here.
